Ken Grimwood was born in 1944 in Dothan, Alabama. He grew up in Pensacola, attended Emory College and graduated from Bard College in the Hudson River Valley of New York state. He moved to Mexico with his [former] wife in the early '70s to write his first novel, and returned to the U.S. a year later, where he did begin work on his first novel. He later said something along the lines of "I loved Puerto Vallerta and...had a great time [wiggle of eyebrows], but my typewriter broke and I could never get around to getting it repaired." Over the course of his adult life he lived with four cats and three women. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1988, where he died in 2003.
